How Much Is Too Much?

One of the great things about living in the United States of America is the freedom we all have to say the things we want to say. Including the person who I heard the other day say “I know it’s an extreme opinion, but I firmly believe that you should have to take parenting classes and get a license to have kids.” This literally made me feel like my brain was going to melt out of my ears, so I’ll explain to you why I think this is one of the stupidest things I’ve heard in 2019 so far. And I’ve heard a LOT of stupid things…

First of all, let’s discuss this little thing I like to call “corruption of power”. If we give the government the power to decide who gets to have children and who doesn’t, that definitely screams unconstitutional to me. And do we really trust the government to not take that power and just absolutely abuse the shit out of it? That’s what government’s do; absolute power corrupts absolutely. I completely agree that there are a hell of a lot of people out there who are shitty parents, but the government should not be allowed to get involved so far into our personal lives that they get to decide who is allowed to procreate and who isn’t. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know it isn’t that. If we give the government that much power, they own us. Even more than they already do. We might as well change the name of the entire damn country because it would not be America anymore.

I wish I wasn’t so worried about this struggle of ideologies that is happening in this country, but it honestly terrifies me. It terrifies me that people don’t know how to look at the history of the world and see what happens when the government has too much power. It terrifies me that people would rather seek out false comfort in having other people take care of them than learning to stand on their own two feet. It terrifies me that we live in a world where people are comfortable with letting complete strangers make all their decisions for them. I wish I knew the answers. I wish I knew how to make people be good parents, hard workers, kind neighbors, and honest leaders. But until we realize that we all need to be responsible for our own selves, there will always be people who think other people have the right to tell you how to live your life.
